What shade rate does each crop need?
The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension vegetable research program (Ernest and Johnson) tested shade cloth on commercial vegetables under Mid-Atlantic summer heat:
- Most vegetables, including tomatoes and peppers: around 30%. Shade cloth was “particularly beneficial to peppers and tomatoes”, and 30% provided adequate cooling without excessive light loss. High temperatures otherwise contribute to blossom end rot and white tissue in tomatoes.
- Very heat-sensitive crops, such as lettuce: 50 to 70%. Lettuce bolts and turns bitter under heat; it tolerates deep shading better than most crops.
- Colour: black is fine. Red, silver, white and blue cloth showed no advantage in the trials, and black is usually the cheapest.

How do you turn the rate into a specification?
