Most buyers start with area. That is logical, but incomplete. A 900 m2 field does not tell you how many rolls to buy. Netting comes in fixed widths, and the width decides the number of strips, joints and overlaps.

That is where many quotes go vague. The buyer asks for square metres. The supplier quotes rolls. Then the installation day arrives and everyone discovers that geometry has a sense of humor.

In short

To turn area into an order, you need four numbers: area length, area width, roll width and overlap. The effective strip width is roll width minus overlap. The number of strips is the covered width divided by that effective width, rounded up. Wider rolls usually reduce joints, but they must still fit the structure, handling and available product formats.

Why area is not enough

Imagine an area 50 m long and 18 m wide.

If the roll width is 4 m and you allow 0.15 m overlap between strips, the effective width per strip is 3.85 m. Covering 18 m requires five strips. That means about 250 linear metres of roll length.

If 6 m rolls are available and practical, the same area may need fewer strips and fewer joints. If only 2 m rolls are available, the installation gets more seams. The square metre area did not change. The job did.

How much overlap should you allow?

For many netting layouts, 10 to 20 cm overlap is a practical starting range. The right value depends on:

  • wind exposure;
  • how the strips are joined;
  • whether the netting is tensioned;
  • whether the netting sits flat, on hoops or over a structure;
  • installer preference.

Overlap is not waste. It is the material that keeps the joint from opening when the site stops behaving like a drawing.

Wider rolls are not always better

Wider rolls can reduce joints. That is good. But wider rolls can also create other problems:

  • heavier handling;
  • harder installation by a small team;
  • mismatch with tunnel or frame spacing;
  • higher transport or packing constraints;
  • limited availability for a specific product.

The best roll width is not the widest width in a catalogue. It is the width that fits the product, structure and crew.

What to send for a quote

To make the quote usable, send:

  1. Area length and width.
  2. Preferred roll width, if known.
  3. Acceptable overlap.
  4. Installation type: flat, rows, hoop, orchard, fence line.
  5. Product family: insect, shade, hail, garden, fencing or other.
  6. Quantity tolerance: exact cut, roll format, or approximate.
  7. Destination country.

When the quote should say “to confirm”

A documented quote should not pretend that every roll format exists for every product. It should say what is confirmed, what is assumed and what still needs checking.
